SpotLook gives a graphical interface to your Mac's Spotlight tool. This GPL application shows your search results as tracks, which are divided by file type, in the left side of the interface.
Tracks can be organized and stored in groups. SpotLook also offers two ways to search through time for Spotlight results, either via date boxes or via a slider bar (which I prefer).
Searches can be customized according to scope, UTI or name and you can open up results in the Finder or in Quick Look. I did feel SpotLook was a little difficult to use.
There aren't any explanations when you launch the program and it's not immediately obvious as to what tracks are and how you can browse through search results.
However, once you get familiar with the program, it does provide very in depth info on all the searches you've carried out in Spotlight.
Because it's a GUI for Spotlight, SpotLook should make Apple's search function easier to use.In some ways though I feel it doesn't completely succeed. If you're a little patient though you should really be able to dig into search results.
